Abstract
Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in the U.S,A. affecting more than two million people. It is expected that as the aging population grows the numbers will continue to increase. This number is expected to rise to over three million by the year 2020. AMD is characterized by the appearance of drusen, a protein complex, at the level of retina pigmented epithelium; and by atrophy of the retina pigmented epithelium. For patients with the dry form of AMD there are no current effective medications.
