Abstract
The purpose of the work is to study the steady state impact of Flexible AC Transmission system (FACTS) controller on Wind generators interconnected to the grid. Fixed speed induction generators are considered in the analysis, which are represented by their steady state model. Due to the weak link between the point of common coupling (PCC) and rest of the grid, the feasibility of connecting more number of wind turbines would be reduced. So in this paper, two schemes are selected for strengthening the grid. They are (a) addition of one more transmission line which is in parallel with existing line (b) fixed series capacitor. Since the fixed speed generator consumes the reactive power, increase in wind turbines would severely affect voltage profile. On the other hand, the consumption of reactive power also increases with respect to wind velocity. In order to improve the voltage profile, Static VAR compensator (SVC) is used. To include SVC, simultaneous and sequential methods of power flow analysis are followed. Steady state analysis of the power system including Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS), Grid strengthening and SVC is performed on a 9 bus distribution system by changing the wind velocity and number of wind turbines. The convergence characteristics of both methods show that more number of wind turbines can be accommodated in FACTS controller incorporated network, with a good voltage profile.
