Abstract

ABSTRACT This article considers major trends in contemporary popular culture, media, and technology as they impact dance and dance education. I ask how do we keep informed, relevant, and rigorous dance instruction staying alive? One possible answer is to consider what dance offers, mentally and physically, to the “digital natives” of generation “why?” I argue that the nature of dance as an artistic, individual, and relationship-based practice is uniquely situated to take advantage of large-scale trends and central themes of immediacy, connectedness, and transparency in 21st-century America. I examine one potential culture–dance–media–technology intersection that lies in the pervasive feeling of immediacy that drives multitasking in our contemporary world of work. Examples of new directions for dance education are discussed.
