Abstract
The various sources and end-uses of energy in China are outlined here, making up an energy profile of the country. A dominant feature of the energy scene in China is coal. China also possesses the world's biggest hydro power resource. There are also fairly large resources of petroleum and natural gas. In rural areas, firewood has traditionally been important and the development of small hydro power and biogas is taking place. Other major renewable energy sources being developed include wind and solar energy. Coal accounts for about 78% of the primary energy consumed in China, while petroleum makes up about 17%. Electricity has a relatively small share in final energy consumption. More than half the energy used in China goes to the industrial sector.
