Abstract

This paper reviews the current status of rural health care infrastructure in the north-eastern region of India, in view of the implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005 that had emphasised on strengthening the rural health care infrastructure in the country. We have analysed the progress in health institutions, availability of health care facilities, the status health manpower and the quality of health care services in the rural areas across the eight north-eastern States. We have found that after the implementation of NRHM in 2005 there has been significant improvement in the rural health infrastructure, especially in case of health centres. But, the condition of the region has been atrocious in terms of other components of health infrastructure, especially in terms of quality of health care services and availability of Specialists and well trained manpower. Keywords: health infrastructure, quality of health services, rural health, shortage of health manpower.
