Abstract

The paper is divided into two parts. In the first, the overall layout of HERA and its main parameters are discussed, followed by a brief review of the preaccelerators. The status of the electron and proton rings is followed by the performance of HERA as a collider. The second part opens with a description of the two detectors, H1 and ZEUS, followed by a discussion of experimental conditions. The paper ends with a presentation of the first physics results from both experiments.
