Abstract

HERA (Hadron Electron Ring Accelerator) consists of an accelerator storage ring for electrons at 30 GeV and one for protons at 820 GeV, both located in a tunnel of 6.3 km circumference, the proton ring being above the electron ring. The ring has four quadrants each with a 90° bend and a 360 m straight section. The straight section can accomodate colliding regions for the electrons and protons circulating in opposite directions. So far two such regions are being equipped with experiments ZEUS and H1.
