Abstract

The description of Capaneus' shield in Stat. Theb. 4 contaminates aspects of Adrastus' shield (the emblem) and of Hippomedon's (the decorative schema) as they are pictured in the second heroic catalogue of Euripides' Phoenissae. This paper helps explain on literary grounds some textual and linguistic problems of the Statian passage.
