Abstract
Abstract Statistical engineering, the engineering of statistical solutions involving the integration of multiple methods, has recently been recognized as a unique discipline alongside statistical science. Solutions to basic and even difficult problems that are narrow and well defined generally do not require engineering of a solution, just the application of the single, correct statistical method. These methods are typically found in textbooks. However, when facing large, complex, and unstructured problems, individual tools rarely suffice. An overall strategy or plan of attack is needed, typically one that integrates multiple methods and even multiple disciplines in a sequential manner. Such strategies are rarely, if ever, found in textbooks; leadership is needed. The solution must be engineered, that is, statistical engineering is required.
