Abstract
Reuben Gold Thwaites, long-time executive of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, presented the following report, The Best Methods of Organization and Work on the Part of State and Local Historical Societies, at the American Historical Association’ s annual meeting in 1905 in response to a survey undertaken the previous year. The excerpted portion focuses primarily on recommendations regarding scope, purpose, and public presentation of history by state and local historical societies. Many of these ideas continue to guide American historical organizations.
