Abstract

The tensor polarizabilities of the 6s 5d1D,3D levels and the 5d6p1P,1F,3P and3D states in barium, as well as differential scalar polarizabilities, have been measured using laser-atomic-beam spectroscopy. The measured values are compared with theoretical values derived from configuration interaction calculations of oscillator strengths. The lack of agreement underlines the need for more accurate calculations.
