Abstract
We review the evidence for IR activity in interacting and merging galaxies. Interactions appear to Induce bursts of star formation of exceptional IR luminosity with very high efficiency. Mergers produce ‘super-starbursts’ of even greater luminosity and spatial extent. As a result, interacting galaxies are exceptionally prominent among IRAS galaxies. Finally, we indicate some of the larger implications of interaction-induced starbursts for extra-galactic astronomy and observational cosmology.
