Abstract

It has been pointed out that delay in the negative feedback in the loop ‘ grain cooling→hydrogen freezing→star formation→grain heating ’ may cause overshoot in the rate of star formation. It is now shown that this will produce the observed properties of elliptical galaxies. It is also shown that the negative feedback in the evolution of a galaxy, due to the dependence of stellar mass on grain abundance described in (1), results in a high degree of uniformity among galaxies in the apparent average heavy element abundance of dwarf stars.
