Abstract

SUMMARY Agglutinating antigens prepared from strains of Brucella abortus, B. melitensis and B. suis were standardized to equal sensitivity (1) by use of the International Standard anti-B. abortus serum, and (2) against a collection of 20 bovine (anti-abortus) sera according to the method recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture. In subsequent tests against sera obtained from a variety of animal species infected with different biotypes of B. abortus, B. suis and B. melitensis, it was evident that the sensitivity of the abortus and suis antigens remained the same but that the melitensis antigen differed from the other 2 in sensitivity except in tests with the sera of cattle infected with B. abortus. Two methods for standardizing B. melitensis antigens are proposed for investigation.
