Abstract
A pilot study was undertaken to establish the prevalence of stammering in adults with mental handicaps, as identified by their carers. Possible differences between those attending adult training centres and those living in hospital were noted. It was found that the prevalence of speech problems, especially stammering, was significantly higher in both groups than would be expected in the “normal” population.
