Abstract
A stunning new concrete, stainless steel and glass spiral staircase has recently been installed in the historic Somerset House in central London, UK. The elegant modular design – inspired by the structural system of the traditional spiral cantilever stairs in the grade 1 listed public building – has been made possible by the use of proprietary ultra-high-strength fibre-reinforced concrete for the 104 stair treads and intermediate landings. This paper describes the design, analysis and construction of the new staircase and in particular the engineering properties – and possibilities – afforded by using super-strong, ductile concrete.
