Abstract
One of the major goals of nutrition counseling is to change dietary behaviors to decrease the risk of or complications from chronic disease. The stages of change model has been utilized to describe the processes of health behavior change. This model has received limited attention in nutrition counseling. We have adapted the stages of change model to use with a high risk minority population seen in the family practice clinic setting. A general protocol that identifies specific goals and appropriate stage-matched strategies for each stage was developed. Use of this model may provide a powerful tool for more effective counseling.
