Increasingly we are building an image of children's moral, social, psychological, and intellectual lives developing by more or less sudden spurts into periods qualitatively different from what preceded them, followed by times of consolidation or latency during which the groundwork is laid for the next substantial change. Somewhat like physical development at puberty, these changes have profound general effects, but we are just beginning to identify and characterize typical stages of indirectly observable kinds of development and what they entail.
