Abstract

The aggregation stability of aqueous dispersions of the hydrated anatase and rutile samples in the neutral and alkaline pH regions is related to the electrostatic stabilization factor and is described in terms of the classical DLVO theory. The abnormally high stability of the dispersions with respect to 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 coagulating electrolytes, which is exhibited in the acidic pH region, is explained by the existence of well-developed gel layers at the particle surfaces. The specific role in the formation of such layers is played by the sulfate ions.
