Abstract

A simple formalism is developed for the study of a strong-focusing accelerator of arbitrary geometry. It is shown to yield readily the necessary and sufficient conditions for stability and for periodicity (with any prescribed period) of the orbits. Criteria are also given which allow the determination of the range of initial conditions for which the orbits are stable.
