Abstract

Abstract With the improvement of medical techniques, biosensor has developed for the need of bio-molecules testing, which provides quantified data to doctors for diagnosis and becomes the milestone of clinical laboratory testing. However, most of them are expansive and non-portable devices, which have to be analyzed through special users, medical laboratory scientist (MLS), in the center and make them time-consuming devices. So the purpose of the thesis is to develop a cost-effective and portable device, which can be used for anyone. In the thesis, we use Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor as our sensor, which can do real-time analysis and provide high sensitivity. Compare to other optical devices, the procedure of SPR testing, a kind of label-free testing, is much easier. These are the reasons why SPR sensors have been used so frequently. For developing a potable sensor with easy user interface, we use embedded system Raspberry Pi (RPi) as our sensor’s platform. In the software of RPi, Graphical User Interface (GUI) is presented for guiding end-users to manipulate the SPR system, including three main workflows: Testing, Calibration, and Analysis. Recently, we have done the ethanol calibration, and the sensitivity is 2.8x10-4reflective index unit (RIU). After that, we will manipulate the platform to do the bio-molecule testing for developing portable SPR biosensor.
