Abstract

Note: The spontaneous songs of children are probably some of the best and. perhaps. first examples of free affective at&or cognitive expression in a musical structure. These songs serve as an excellent way for beginning to understand how a child processes information, expresses thoughts. feeling and experiences and copes with conflicts and transitions. The roots of songwriting. and of melody and lyrics as emotional expression lie in these productions from childhood. Beginning to understand this normal, developmental process as part of a sequence of behaviors that pave the way not only for musical production, but also for affective expression. will enhance the music therapist’s understanding of developmental appropriateness and sequence, both of which are basic to assessment and therapy.
