Abstract
Spontaneous pneumothorax is usually due to a ruptured emphysematous bleb. Ordinarily it comes on during normal activities and is not necessarily associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. It is always accompanied by symptoms, either pain in the chest or dyspnea, and so should always be diagnosed. It can be fatal and therefore diagnosis should not be missed. Chest x-ray will confirm the diagnosis in suspected cases. When spontaneous pneumothorax is present, it is suggested that closed thoracotomy catheter water-seal drainage be established immediately. This method of treatment is advocated because it is simple and time-saving both for the patient and for the doctor. If there is a tension pneumothorax, it may be life saving. Further, it tends to prevent other complications from spontaneous pneumothorax which are empyema, persistent bronchopleural fistula and captive lung.
