The dramatic picture of sudden unilateral chest pain with dyspnea and the finding of a collapsed lung on physical examination and chest roentgenogram are easily recognized. Since spontaneous pneumothorax may occur in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, it was commonly believed that all spontaneous pneumothoraces were tuberculous. Kjaergaard1in 1932 published an excellent monograph describing his studies of 51 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax in apparently healthy people without any evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis.
