Abstract

Cellulose acetate fibres undergo spontaneous elongation in nitromethane vapour. The phenomenon was observed in cellulose diacetate fibres prepared by the dry- as well as the wet-spinning method. An as yet unknown feature is described for diacetate fibres in nitromethane vapour: after attaining its maximum length the fibre resumes its original dimensions. The spontaneous elongation is accompanied by a decrease of the orientation angle ϕ.
