Społeczna odpowiedzialność uczelni na przykładzie Politechniki Wrocławskiej
The research problem described in the title of the article can be formulated as a question: by what means is the idea of the University’s social responsibility implemented at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology in its operation? We are talking here about the idea of sensu largo, because universities’ social responsibility requires an even more complete theoretical conceptualization. This idea refers to the theoretically recognized, complex, constantly changing, and multi-directional and network cooperation between the University and the heterogeneous environment. The conclusions of this submission may be a stimulus for further research on the developing concept of university social responsibility. The first part of the article is based on the analysis of the literature of the subject, while the second part examines documents.

Abstract The article refers to a valid and current research area related to business sustainability. The development of the concept of sustainability has resulted in the linking of the overall concept to the actions that entrepreneurs take for sustainable development. Thus, it has moved the discussion to the level of sustainable business models, taking into account economic, environmental and social aspects together. The paper focuses on the social layer of the sustainable business model. The main objective of this article is to identify the relationship between activities in the social dimension and sustainable outcomes. Research covers organizations operating in Poland and is based on a questionnaire (the statistical analysis is based on empirical studies conducted in 303 companies operating in Poland). The data collected allowed the construction of a regression model and the results revealed statistically significant relationships between social outcomes and values for society and employees.

Background: Multidimensionality, as well as the potential benefits of social responsibility of universities (SRU) described in the literature, prompts in-depth research into the actual implementation of this concept by universities. In Poland, it is only since 2017 that higher education institutions have started to declare the implementation of its principles. Research objectives: The aim of this article is to present the results of research concerning the practical implementation of the idea of social responsibility at Polish HEIs. The literature review was supplemented with empirical research based on the analysis and evaluation of information on SRU available on HEIs’ websites (random selection was used for this purpose). The research was conducted in the period July-September 2023. Research design and methods: A review of the literature on the subject was supplemented with empirical research. The research was based on the analysis and evaluation of information on SRU available on the websites of higher education institutions. It was conducted in the period July-September 2023, and a random selection of institutions that had signed the Declaration of Social Responsibility of Universities between 2017 and 2022 was evaluated. Results: The research resulted in a list of good practices, as well as recommendations for improvement measures for universities that have formally declared the implementation of SRU principles in practice. Conclusions: Higher education stakeholders (internal and external), especially management, have a decisive influence on the practical implementation of the SRU concept. It is their awareness and determination that determines whether social responsibility will be developed in a real and tangible way by all university partners.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has received increasing attention in recent decades. The concept of social responsibility is being applied in universities. Because universities have goals that differ significantly from corporations, the notion of university social responsibility (USR) has emerged in the academic field. The Ministry of Education in Taiwan has regularly implemented USR practice plans since 2018 (Executive Yuan, Taiwan, ROC, 2019). The core values of these plans are "local coalition" and "talent cultivation". Moreover, these plans encourage universities to use the power of professional knowledge and creation to minimize the gap between learning and application for students and to integrate local resources and hands-on strategies to better collaborate with universities around the world and expand participation in international academic activities. Sustainable development (SD) is a core objective of both CSR and USR. The United Nations has advocated for sustainable development since 1987 and formalized the five-component paradigm (people, partnership, peace, planet, and prosperity, 5Ps) in 2015. UN Agenda 2030 addresses 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), 169 targets, and 3,155 actions, encouraging all national governments to establish national SD action plans (United Nations, 2015). Based on the review of the literature and conceptual frameworks related to USR and SD (Bokhari, 2017), we integrate practice experiences and propose three suggestions for universities: 1) diversities universities could create a campus-wide climate of and comprehensive practice for social responsibility using their professional knowledge; 2) the social, economy, and environment are included in universities SD. The curriculum development of universities links to social practice activities to achieve the goals of talent cultivation to meet social needs; 3) The university projects include specific actions and timeline. The impacts and achievements of USR and SD may be appraised by internal and external experts. Fooyin University is a school of science and technology related to "Big Health". Based on the above theoretical frameworks, the outcome evaluation model of the Center for USR, the Ministry of Education, and the UN's SDGs, we implemented the "Time Wheel Sustainable Model of Social Responsibility at Fooyin University" (Figure 1) and began cooperating with private and government organizations. The model is an intervention and evaluation guideline for the time-dynamic wheel, with the target goal of cultivating health promotion and sustainable development talent. The outcomes and impacts of the model comprise four domains and sixteen indicators. Stakeholders of this model are students/alumni, teaching faculties and administration staff, communities, and the public. USR curriculum designs involve the School of Nursing, School of Medical and Health Sciences, School of Environment and Life Sciences, and College of Humanities and Management. In 2020, 718 faculties and 2,012 students participated in USR projects. In 2021, the participation numbers were 679 faculties and 2,303 students. The Fooyin USR is now firmly rooted in thirty communities. Starting in 2022, The Fooyin USR has collaborated with local private companies (CSR) and local youths and communities (regional revitalization, RR) to launch the 3 R formula framework of the USR. The goal of the 3 R action plan is to use artificial intelligence technology to provide innovative, community-based care. The USR operations of university sustainable development around Taiwan are achieving wonderful results, with even better achievements expected. This special column presents case studies of innovative community care and sustainable development within the context of university social responsibility at four universities, including Fooyin University, Siaogang Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University, National Cheng Kung University, and Taipei Medical University. Since 2020, nations around the world have fought off COVID-19. The strategies of national prevention have evolved to better respond to disasters and to live with the virus. Therefore, in the post-pandemic period, universities around Taiwan have been implementing sustainable development practices. These universities are making strong efforts to develop innovative care for communities through academic exchange and publishing in order to accomplish social responsibility.

The concept of university social responsibility (USR) is getting increasingly interrelated with the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) because universities are key institutions for promoting private sector businesses, creating social capital, and supporting innovations. Since USR is important in promoting economic development, any CSR program that is supported by USR, the effectiveness of CSR programs gets higher because of its support for the society and environment becomes more sustainable by making the support more ethical, resourceful, and responsible. Furthermore, the incorporation of USR into CSR will lead to more profitable companies because the brand images of these companies will be stronger. This chapter first introduces the concept of USR, and it then explains the relationships between USR and CSR by utilizing the comparative case study method. The case of Saudi Arabia revealed that there is a healthy USR-CSR cooperation in the country, promising a better future for the development in Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, the case for Türkiye depicted that the support for USR-CSR cooperation is decreasing, indicating the possibility of negative impacts on the society in the near future.

An implementation of the knowledge economy influence on changes in higher education. A significant element of the concept is introducing an effective knowledge management mechanism, which lead to greater competitiveness and innovation of the university in both a Polish and international context. Therefore in the university’s strategic areas of action it is necessary to present not only scientific achievements but also social, ecological and economic factors in the form of social reports, in accordance with the concept of social responsibility and new role of universities as the organizations serving its environment. There are many examples of good practices developed by foreign universities, which interpret the university social responsibility in a different way, depending on their development strategies. So far social responsibility report has not been published by any Polish technical university. The aim of the article is to review the university social responsibility practices in the foreign universities as well as to present the stages of social responsibility reporting in the technical university on the example of AGH University of Science and Technology. The article states that AGH has developed significant number of good practices in social responsibility, which have not yet been presented in the form of social report.

This article aims to analyze the concept of university social responsibility (USR) in its differentdimensions – social and cultural promotion, sustainable economic, development – and to identify challenges for today’s universities, within the social and educational fabric of which it is part. The research problem was based on: the understanding of the purpose of knowledge assumed bythe university, specifically in relation to the concept of USR; the challenges university is facing fromits social and educational commitment to contribute to the development of its various dimensionsand to fulfill its social responsibility; understanding if USR is always the same, regardless of geographicand social context. The methodology used was a qualitative approach, using the principlesof document analysis. Statutes from 42 public universities were analyzed: 15 Portuguese universitiesand 27 Brazilian universities. USR is as a modernization alternative. This alternative allows for theconstant pursuit of redefining socially responsible management and ongoing criticism about waysof thinking and of adopting educational processes. It forms the link between knowledge generatedin the context of its application and the local, national and global needs. In other words, it is thelink between the knowledge generated institutionally and the impact on societal development.

Purpose: The aim of this article is to present the results of research concerning the implementation process of the concept of social responsibility at Polish universities that, between 2017 and 2022, formally joined the group of signatories of the “Declaration of Social Responsibility of Universities” (USR Declaration, 2022). Design/methodology/approach: The empirical findings are presented against the background of a literature review. This article is part of a broader research project entitled “Social Responsibility in the University Value Chain” (2024-2026), funded by the Angelus Silesius University of Applied Sciences. The empirical study was conducted in 2024 and involved the analysis and assessment of information on USR practices published on the websites of 39 Polish higher education institutions (HEIs) that had signed the “Declaration of University Social Responsibility”. Findings: Based on literature and empirical studies, the authors demonstrates that the USR aligns with the principles of modern university management, and that its incorporation into the organisational structure may effectively contribute to enhancing institutional resilience to risks, as well as to the development of future-oriented competencies. Originality/value: The essence of the presented approach lies in the continuous development of cooperation among various groups of external and internal stakeholders (students, university staff, representatives of the socio-economic environment, etc.). This cooperation may result in the creation of interdisciplinary teams, developing strategies and action plans aimed at better aligning academic education with the needs not only of the labour market but also of future generations. The research conducted in 2024 among the universities that are signatories of the “USR Declaration” led to the creation of a list of good practices, which may serve as inspiration for those institutions wishing to develop the idea of USR. Keywords: social responsibility, university, social responsibility of universities, university management, external stakeholders. Category of the paper: research paper.

The development of human civilization convincingly proves to us that a person, being born in a certain historical epoch in a certain country, prepares not for life in general, but for life in specific social and cultural conditions. Analysis of the available philosophical, pedagogical, sociological literature and areas of scientific and educational research indicates that researchers focus their attention on the problem of social responsibility of modern Universities. In particular, interest in this issue has grown significantly in recent years. The activities of Universities are never limited to the training of future specialists. Universities perform the social function of reproduction and development of society and its systems through the processes of translation of cultural norms in changing historical circumstances, each time on the basis of new social relations. Although among researchers there is no consensus on the definition of social responsibility of the University and the areas of its implementation, there is a general understanding of this phenomenon as a certain obligation of a higher education institution to society. That is why it is important to realize that the social responsibility of Universities should be considered in the context of the general social and cultural dynamics of a particular society. And if there were times when the social responsibility of the University could be represented by the concept of «literacy», then modern world makes completely different demands on education in general and on understanding of the University social responsibility in particular. The social responsibility of the University to society as a social institution, its individual groups and strata, is its commitment to contribute to the solution of important social problems.

The purpose of this study is to explore how the “New type of industry and research chain value creation project” promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology in Taiwan can help universities to achieve university social responsibility (USR), promote social innovation, and achieve sustainable development. The university social responsibility defined in this study is proposed through literature analysis. The study interviewed three professionals who actually participated in the project and served as core positions. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted. Key findings are drawn as follows. First, the term USR is multifaceted and needs further refinement in light of the changing and dynamic roles of universities. Second, the value creation plan helps universities achieve social responsibility. Third, the value creation team incorporates the concept of university social responsibility into the consideration of development factors, which contributes to the sustainability of the project. Fourth, the value creation plan faces the willingness of participants and the public's unclear understanding of university social responsibility. Finally, practical benefits include the joy of team members, the cultivation of talents and the dream of having a business.

The article highlights that the concept of social responsibility does not only offer possibilities for brand building, but is also the social obligation of universities for the empowerment of their various external communities. After an overview of the current terminology of corporate- and university social responsibility and university community engagement, it presents forms of practice differentiating between USR and community engagement activities using the example of an Eastern-European university of applied sciences. The mainly qualitative data, collected from the content analysis of institutional documents and semi-structured interviews with key members of staff, demonstrate that although the university is a small regional institution, its social responsibility practice is commendable.

Motivation: In accordance with the Law on Higher Education, the mission of the Polish education and science system is to provide top quality education and scientific activity, develop civic attitudes, and be involved in social development and creation of an innovation-based economy. The third mission of an academy focusing on social responsibility is to build mutual relations with the community in order to popularise and implement research results. In recent years, university social responsibility (USR) has turned into one of the priorities for Polish academic authorities, although research shows this to be a new matter in this area, which often leads to incorrect classification of activities resulting from regular obedience of the law as activities confirming the social responsibility of the organisation. Aim: The main objective of this article is to identify examples of socially responsible activity assumed by Polish academies and demonstrate the similarities with such activities conducted by other foreign academies. The author also wanted to associate the name of Professor Karol Adamiecki with social responsibility affairs what is usually overlooked in studies on this subject. Results: The conducted analyses confirmed that Polish academies are assuming socially responsible activity voluntarily and not just in order to fulfil the criterion of conformity with the currently effective laws. Furthermore, these results also confirm that — in comparison with academies abroad — the involvement of Polish academies in implementation of the concept of social responsibility is on the right path of development, although not as popularised, which only confirms the genuine and non-marketing approach to the matter of social responsibility.

A potential opportunity for universities is application of the social responsibility concept. In the case of universities, the importance of this concept is, in view of their specific institutional character and mission, fundamental in comparison with the other types of economic entities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the university social responsibility concept. And the basis can lie in the works from the area of corporate social responsibility. The article deals with the problems of modification of the corporate social responsibility concept in the context of the university social responsibility. It further develops the theoretical resources of corporate social responsibility and stakeholder theory. The basic resources of the university social responsibility are described and its key areas and activities are identified.

This chapter presents a systematic review of the evolution and current status of the University Social Responsibility (USR) concept. USR advances that universities should go beyond the core functions of teaching, research, and service and voluntarily act beyond legal requirements to promote the public good and environmental sustainability. There is a growing recognition that USR should be integrated with university strategy and operation practices. Thus, we propose a Values, Process and Impact (VPI) conceptual model and formulate a USR performance assessment framework based on a stakeholder perspective. This assessment framework provides a methodology for constructing a USR index that would rate and benchmark universities, as well as promote USR as a management model. Further, the USR performance assessment framework can be utilized as a management tool to further universities’ USR efforts to achieve triple-bottom-line sustainability.

Purpose of the study. The research materials continue the author's series of articles devoted to the problems of the stakeholder approach. The social responsibility of business acts as a launching pad for fruitful cooperation and interaction between business structures and authorities. The concept of corporate social responsibility is very dynamic, characterized by constant transformation, change and enrichment with new ideas. So, if in the middle of the XX century it developed rather slowly, not finding a response in the business environment, then in the XXI century it is “preached” as the main business philosophy by most of the advanced countries. At the same time, a characteristic feature of existing scientific approaches is the emphasis on technocratic and economic positions and the complete absence of approaches based on the relationship between business and stakeholders. However, such approaches from the author's point of view are insufficient for the entire range of requirements imposed by the external and internal environment on modern business. The ambiguity of the interpretation of the concept under study made it possible to state the complexity of this category and its multidimensional nature. In this regard, there is a need for a comprehensive statistical assessment of the degree of business socialization and the choice of appropriate tools for this.Materials and methods. The statistical assessment of the degree of business social responsibility is based on local criteria, combined into five blocks. The presented system of criteria characterizes the activities of the business taking into account the requirements of the stakeholders. At the same time, the list of criteria can be adjusted when socio-economic trends and problems of society change. The information base of the study was the annual and financial reports of regional enterprises, the results of expert assessments. The hierarchy analysis method and the graphical polygon (radar) method were used as a tool for assessing the degree of business socialization.Results. The article concretizes the concept of social and economic responsibility of business. The author's approach covers the idea of a responsible partnership based on the interaction of business with a wide range of interested groups involved in active and passive forms of participation in its operations. The variety of interests of stakeholders representing various subjects of market interaction emphasizes the multi-criteria nature of the category of “social and economic responsibility of business”. Statistical tools are fully capable of providing an assessment of the entire spectrum of signs of corporate social responsibility. The integral indicator of the degree of social responsibility, built on the basis of the hierarchy analysis method, made it possible to distinguish four degrees of business socialization: low, moderate, noticeable and high. For each degree of socialization, characteristic features are determined. The results of the study showed that as the degree of social responsibility grows, business performance indicators increase and its well-being in the long term depends on the coordination of the interests of key participants in corporate relations. An integral assessment of the degree of business socialization was carried out according to twenty-six local criteria. As a result of calculating the private and local ranks of the values of the corresponding criteria, fifteen polygons of the degree of socialization of the regional business were built, included in the sample. The results obtained make it possible to ascertain the existence of a high degree of heterogeneity of regional enterprises in terms of the investigated integral indicator. The leaders in terms of social responsibility are JSC “Teplichnoye”, OJSC “Mordovcement”, OJSC “Elektrovypryamitel”, OJSC “Lato”. Outsiders include OJSC Cheese-Making Plant “Ichalkovsky”, Ltd “Lisma”, OJSC “Stankostroitel”, OJSC “RubEx”. Among the features of regional enterprises, one can single out the heterogeneity in the distribution of indicators along the radial straight lines. JSC “Teplichnoye” is characterized by sharp fluctuations in rank values, which is most active in interaction with consumers, its own personnel, but also stands out as one of the smallest values of the block associated with relationships with business partners. A similar situation is observed among outsider enterprises. The proposed methodology can be used as a tool for a comprehensive study of existing trends in the practice of socially responsible business behavior, characteristics of the results achieved, as well as identifying problem areas that focus additional attention.

Through the ethnographic research developed primarily in the city of Smiths Falls, Ontario and desk review that included the consultation of digital platforms and the problematization of the concept of social responsibility, the objective is to reflect on the relationship between the corporate discourse of Canopy Growth and its social responsibility practices. The article is made up of different sections; first, it reflects on the incipient literature and its contradictions regarding cannabis through the lenses of various disciplines, as well as on the historical development of the concept of corporate social responsibility within capitalism, subsequently it identifies narratives regarding social responsibility promoted by Canopy Growth in its press releases and other digital inputs and some counter-narratives issued by other stakeholders. Finally, the narratives of members of the interest groups are presented, giving prominence to former Canopy Growth workers who, share their first-hand experiences in the corporation. The conclusions demonstrate the multiple inconsistencies that Canopy Growth embodies when raising the concept of social responsibility in its media discourses. These were evidenced by personnel who worked for the corporation in the city of Smiths Falls, Ontario. Knowing the modus operandi of a leading corporation in the cannabis industry gives us the tools that are necessary to envision its potential actions in Mexico given that Canopy Growth has shown an interest in expanding into our territory for several years.
