Abstract
Experiment shows the deep-inelastic scattering structure function ratio {ital F}{sup {ital n}}{sub 2}/{ital F}{sup {ital p}}{sub 2} and the nucleon spin asymmetries to be strongly x-dependent. In the context of the parton model, the observed inhomogeneities mean that quarks with different isospins and spins carry different fractions of the nucleon momentum. A systematic procedure is presented which permits the structure functions of nucleons to be calculated from a nonrelativistic constituent quark model. This calculation shows that all of these asymmetry effects can be qualitatively understood in terms of the admixtures of excited-state configurations in the nucleon wave function due to color hyperfine interactions. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
