Abstract

A simple spin transformation has been used to calculate the spin polarizability for spin-unsaturated closed shell nuclei with Skyrme's effective interaction. The method yields simple explicit expressions for polarizabilities and is particularly convenient for investigating the interplay between central and spin-orbit interactions. Calculations have been made with different sets of interaction parameters. For some parameter sets the nuclei studied are unstable with respect to an isoscalar spin polarization, while other sets give stability. In all cases there is stability with respect to isovector spin polarization. The mean excitation energy of isovector magnetic dipole modes has been calculated using sum rule techniques.
