Abstract

Abstract Pion-induced η production on a pair of nucleons is shown to be as important as the one-step π → η conversion on a single nucleon. The dominant two-nucleon contribution comes from the π(NN)J=0,I=1→η(NN)J′=0,I′=1 transition. Because of the larg cancellation among various three-nucleon amplitudes, the effect of three-nucleon processes on the η-production cross sections is much smaller than that of the two-nucleon processes.
