Abstract

A fragment of a conelike structure, referable to the genus Spencerites, from a Bevier coal ball collected in southeastern Kansas is described. It is shown to be conspecific with Lepidodendron moorei. The axis is badly crushed with only the sclerified cortical strands and occasional vascular fragments being preserved. Sporangia and sporophylls are also poorly preserved but possibly similar in detail to Spencerites insignis. The spore is conspecific with Spencerisporites gracilis; there is no evidence of heterospory. It is suggested that Spencerites may actually represent only a fertile portion of a branch system rather than an apical strobilus.
