Abstract

Laser-induced dielectric breakdown has been used to initiate fragmentation in molecular gases and gas mixtures. The emission spectra of the atoms, ions, and molecular fragments has been assigned and used to identify specific components of given mixtures. While this study only reports on mixtures of hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons, the technique is general and does not rely on laser absorption in any component of the mixtures.
