Abstract

trans-4-Dimethylamino-4′-(1-oxobutyl)stilbene (DOS) was synthesized and its spectroscopic and photophysical properties studied. This molecule exhibits a strong intramolecular charge transfer absorption in the near-UV region and a moderate emission in the blue to red region. The solvent-induced shift of its emission and absorption spectra correlates well with the empirical solvent polarity E T(30). The ground and excited state dipole moments of DOS are estimated to be 6 debyes and 22 debyes respectively. It has a short decay time and a moderate emission yield in ordinary solvents at room temperature, which is attributed to the fast trans → cis isomerization.
