Abstract

Abstract : We present the results of development and comprehensive characterization of fully densified erbium (Er3+): magnesium oxide (MgO) and neodymium (Nd3+):MgO transparent ceramics fabricated from specially formulated nanopowders. The results are presented with major emphasis on potential laser application and the outlook for substantially improved laser power scaling at room temperature based on unique thermal properties of the host material. Also presented are the spectroscopic characterization results (absorption, fluorescence, and emission lifetimes) of Er3+ and Nd3+ dopant ions in the temperature range from 10 to 300 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported successful demonstration of MgO host material doping with rare earth (RE) ions. Spectroscopic results are indicative of single-site RE ion incorporation with nearly perfect single-crystalline environment within the MgO ceramic grains. Obtained experimental data can be used for assessing these materials as potential gain media for high power laser applications.
