Abstract

We report measurements of the luminescence of free exitons and electron-hole droplets in Ge. Agreement between lineshape theory and experiment is obtained; no extraneous broadening of the free exciton is observed. We find the condensation energy of electron-hole drops to be 2.06 ± 0.15 meV; the exciton ground state splitting to be 0.7 meV and the electron-hole density in the droplet phase, including temperature dependence, to be n( T) = 2.38 × 10 17 (1-0.01 T 2) cm −3.
