Abstract

PbO–Al2O3–P2O5glasses containing different concentrations of Cr2O3 (ranging from 0 to 1.5 mol %) were prepared by melt quenching technique. The amorphous nature of the prepared glass samples conformed by X-ray diffraction method. A number of spectroscopic studies viz., infrared, optical absorption spectra, ESR and fluorescence of these glasses have been carried out. The analysis of these results point out that chromium ions mostly exist in Cr3+ state when the concentration of Cr2O3<1.0 mol% and above this concentration, these ions seem to exist in Cr6+ state in the glass network. The optical absorption spectra bands observed at about 450 and 650 nm are assigned to 4A2 → 4T1 (F), 4A2→ 4T2 transitions respectively. Additionally, a pair of weak bands at 690 and 700 nm observed due to 4A2 → 2T1 and 4A2 → 2E (spin and parity forbidden) transitions.
