Abstract

Spectroscopic analysis of Pr 3+ and Er 3+ ions in fluoride and oxide systems belonging to the same heavy metal glass family has been reported. From absorption and emission spectra using Judd–Ofelt theory various spectroscopic parameters like radiative transition rates, luminescence lifetimes, radiative quantum efficiencies, spectral line widths as well as emission cross-sections are determined. Selected examples for the spectroscopic behavior of both optical glasses are discussed in relation to the practical application of these materials as a potential laser-active media in the visible and infrared spectral region.
