Abstract
The polymerization products of α-pinene adsorbed on kaolinite from the gas phase have been studied by GPC and IR, UV and PMR spectroscopy. According to GPC polymerization of α-pinene results in the formation of oligo-α-pinene with M n =500 and M w =750 in the almost complete absence of monomeric compounds. The polymerization reaction is preceded by complex isomerization conversions of α-pinene. Oligo-α-pinene incorporates the monomeric units with the structure of intermediate isomerizates. A method of treating the PMR spectrum by isolating three regions of proton signals is proposed-aliphatic, aliphatic at double bonds and olefinic. The structure of the oligo-α-pinene may be described by a combination of saturated and unsaturated isomerized units including units with tetra-substituted double bonds.
