Abstract

Corrections to Planck's radiation formula significant for submillimeter black body standards of usual laboratory size are presented for various spectral resolutions. Improved calculations reveal first order correction factors of the type (1-const/ν) for hemispherical and cone-shaped cavities, whereas only small second order corrections (1-const/ν 2) are found for the cube and the sphere. The implications on Einstein's coefficients. Wien's displacement law, the mean square fluctuations, and the Stefan-Boltzman radiation law are considered. The compatibility with thermodynamics is discussed. The first order corrections to entropy, free energy, specific heat, and to the isothermal equation of state are presented. The auto-correlation of the electric radiation field is calculated and given interms of generalized Riemaun zeta functions.
