Abstract
When an intense ultrashort laser pulse is focused into a dense gas, a plasma can be generated directly by multiphoton or tunneling ionisation. This plasma can affect the propagation of the laser pulse, causing both spatial defocusing and spectral blueshifting. A two-dimensional calculation of the propagation of an intense pulse through an ionising gas is presented, and the correlation between spatial and spectral effects is investigated.
