Abstract

The spectral and dynamic characteristics (including magnitudes) are determined for a number of strong earthquakes in the Armenian upland and adjacent areas on the basis of the procedure developed at the USSO. The records of standard instruments and of TCHISS instruments at the Obninsk observatory are used. The results are compared with similar estimates obtained from the data of the Gräfenberg observatory with application of the spectral magnitude approach. It is shown for all the earthquakes considered, that the periods of the maximum magnitudes at both observatories are largely in agreement. Dynamic characteristics, such as seismic moments and the lengths of rupture, from the Obninsk observatory data generally agree with the CMT data and satisfy the relationship between the length of rupture and the surface wave magnitude (Riznichenko, 1976).
