Abstract
MCCARTHY, B. C., T. I. VIERHELLER, AND W. A. WISTENDAHL (Dept. Bot., Ohio Univ., Athens, Ohio, 45701). Species ordination of upper slope oak-hickory stands of southeastern Ohio. Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 111: 56-60. 1984.-Detrended correspondence analysis was used to analyze the variations in the distribution of tree species with respect to aspect in an upper slope oak-hickory community of the mixed mesophytic forest of southeastern Ohio. Intensive sampling within this restricted slope position minimized the heterogeneity of soil parent materials while maximizing aspect variation between stands. Aspect proved to be of predictive value in estimating species distribution patterns. Quercus spp. and Carya glabra were more abundant on south-facing slopes. Carya ovata appeared to be more closely associated with the mesic species of north-facing slopes. Carya tomentosa, however, exhibited a distribution pattern apparently independent of aspect.
