Abstract
A lack of long term planning, compounded by the unpalatable effects of inflation and disquiet about the research councils' funding philosophy are some of the problems worrying university administrators at the moment. They now have a chance to express these in public to the Science Subcommittee of the House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology which was formed to enquire into the needs of scientific research in British universities.
