Abstract
Many have tried to pinpoint the precise factors that keep nurses at the bedside. Proposed variables for retention have included improving pay, staffing, recognition, and access to appropriate mental health resources. This author proposes that to retain a nurse, one must first understand nurses at their core. Nurses are trained to speak to the why, the underlying rationale for any given condition or intervention. The following discussion is a reflection of this concept.
