The development of cities is the current main theme. There are great differences of the development characteristics among cities in the world. At present, many cities are mainly faced with uncoordinated development caused by rapid urbanization, large environmental problems, and obvious regional differences, which manifested urban sprawl and urban shrinkage in space. This chapter gives an overview of theories and methods of urban development assessment. Based on the topics of urban sprawl and urban shrinkage, urban sprawl in China’s megacities and urban shrinkage in Japan are estimated, revealing the diversity and heterogeneity of urban development. This chapter also provides examples to concretize the characteristics of urban development in developing and developed countries, which is conducive to exploring the pathway of sustainable urban development from a comprehensive perspective.
