Abstract
Recently the main mechanism responsible for spatial frequency mixing in electrooptic crystals has been identified using elementary gratings. Now we apply the nonlinear mixing process to generate frequency difference holograms of real objects. We theoretically derive the properties of these holograms and experimentally demonstrate their application to the problem of nondestructive read-out of optically erasable volume holograms.
