Abstract
Microscopic spatial distribution of polymer radicals generated by γ-irradiation of poly(methyl methacrylate) at room temperature has been determined by measuring the longitudinal relaxation rate of the radicals by means of an electron spin echo method. The radicals are generated in pairs, and the average distance between the counterpart of the radical-pair is 3.1 nm. This result is consistent with the view that a propagating-type radical, .C(CH 3) (COOCH 3)CH 2-, is generated by the thermal conversion of a side-chain -COOĊH 2 radical.
