Abstract

Tree age, rootstock, soil type, thinning practices and soil fertilizer application were examined as possible cultural factors affecting Spartan apple (Malus pumila Mill.) breakdown. Postharvest fruit analysis of calcium, potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, boron, acid, fruit diameter, soluble solids and internal chlorophyll content of fruit were also examined as potential correlative factors. A significant negative correlation existed between the incidence of breakdown and flesh calcium content. Boron, potassium, fruit size soluble solids and tree vigor were positively correlated to breakdown. A statistical profile of orchard conditions and fruit mineral levels associated with minimum breakdown is presented.
