Abstract

The current in a spark channel following voltage breakdown between the high voltage terminal and pressure vessel wall of a large single-ended Van de Graaff machine has been measured. The current waveform is oscillatory and has an envelope which is damped with time. The observed damping coefficient is compared with that obtained using a theoretical expression for the variation of the spark channel resistance with time. Reasonable agreement has been achieved. It is also shown that the initial stored energy on the terminal is rapidly absorbed by the insulating gas during discharge.
