Abstract
The power line communication (PLC) channel is known as a frequency selective, multipath fading environment. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission technique is a very attractive technique for high data-rate transmission in a frequency selective fading channel. In this paper, Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) with OFDM is applied to PLC. Both 2×1 and 2×2 ST-OFDM systems for PLC are developed. Both linear time invariant (LTI) and linear time variant (LTV) 15-path PLC channel models are investigated. The LTI channel model is employed for computing the magnitude and impulse response, and served as mean values of the LTV model, which is employed for bit error rate (BER) performance simulations. The BER performance of the regular OFDM, 2×1 and 2×2 ST-OFDM systems in both Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Additive Impulsive Gaussian Noise (AIGN) is assessed and compared via computer simulations. The BER performance of the 2×2 ST-OFDM system outperforms the other systems in both AWGN (for Eb/No greater than 8 dB) and AIGN (for Eb/No greater than 25 dB) environments.
