Abstract

This paper is intended to provide a brief history and current update of the activities of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority and the progress of Spaceport America. Spaceport America is the current form of an almost twenty year drive to create a spaceport in southern New Mexico. While it started out as a potential land-based recovery site for reentry capsules, the spaceport evolved into a test and operations base for the Lockheed Martin VentureStar project and ultimately developed into the future operational headquarters of Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial space tourism spaceline. Through examining Spaceport America’s history, a few observations are offered regarding the structure of the commercial space industry and its needs, as well as the ultimate objective of a commercial spaceport.
